The Whisper of Surprise

Sowing

For me there is always a whisper of surprise when growing from seed…you never really know what will happen!  There is also the simple fact that growing from seed is the cheapest way to grow your own and it is absolutely the most rewarding method of raising your own plants.  There isn’t anything more satisfying than harvesting fruit and vegetables, that you have grown yourself!

This weekend the weather here in Wales has been appalling so I’ve been confined to the house, greenhouse and garden for my gardening fix.  Yesterday, I decided to dig through the seed box looking for ‘sow in March’ on the packets and after finding a small collection, I drew up a basic ‘Seed-Starting Plan’ in my allotment note book.

There is one slight problem…because this is my first year on Plot 5A, I have no idea when my ‘Frost-Free’ date will be!!  (Note to self:…

It’s with great sadness that we have to report the death of Roy Humphries; Roy was Chairman of Hazel Grove Allotment Association for many years. Needless to say, our thoughts and sympathy go out to all his family at this sad time.

Rodent Control no longer free

Unknown-6

Allotments used to get a regular “rat man” service ! This service has generally been downgraded over the years to an “as and when required” facility for allotments.
Until now, the service has been available on request and free of charge for allotments.

The Council website (see under Pest Control), says that from 1st April 2015, the service for rat infestation that was available to domestic properties free of charge is being withdrawn and a charge of £43.92 for an initial visit and up to two follow-up visits is being imposed.

Allotments were always considered to be “domestic properties”, hence the free service previously. As the change applies to all residents in the Borough we have no reason to plead any special exemption.

The “call out” charge for commercial properties is £74.80, so make sure the Council are aware that allotments are considered to be “domestic properties”. Phone 0161 217-6017
