AVIAN FLU/STORM EUNICE RISK UPDATE

Beware Storm Eunice could worsen bird flu spread! We’ve been experiencing some wet and windy weather this week in the UK and there is worse to come with Storm Eunice arriving on Friday.
Flood water can spread bird flu if it leaks into poultry houses, so it’s vital that you check your birds’ housing for holes that could let water in and do all you can to block them up.
Ensure tarpaulin is well secured to prevent it from blowing away in the strong winds.
Check poultry house roofs and strengthen any weak areas.
Turbulent weather churns up silt underwater in previously infected ponds and reservoirs, where the virus has been shown to lie dormant for several weeks. As a result, wild waterfowl could become infected and spread the virus. Keep your birds indoors and away from wild birds.

BIRD FLU LATEST
NEW GOVERNMENT RULES COME INTO FORCE
FROM MONDAY 29th NOVEMBER
POULTRY KEEPERS MUST NOW DO THE FOLLOWING
House or net all poultry and captive birds to keep them separate from wild birds.
Cleanse and disinfect clothing, footwear, equipment, and vehicles before and after contact with poultry and captive birds – if practical, use disposable protective clothing.
Reduce the movement of people, vehicles, or equipment to and from areas where poultry and captive birds are kept, to minimise contamination from manure, slurry, and other products, and use effective vermin control.
Thoroughly cleanse and disinfect housing on a continuous basis.
Keep fresh disinfectant at the right concentration at all farm and poultry housing entry and exit points.
Minimise direct and indirect contact between poultry and captive birds and wild birds, including making sure all feed and water is not accessible to wild birds.

TREE PLANTING DAY

In partnership with The Queen’s Green Canopy Committee, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, City of Trees invites you for a day of tree planting at Gatley Hill, Stockport to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’, as part of the Queens Green Canopy.
As a very local group to Gatley Hill we would like to extend the invite to your group members and your networks to create a legacy that will benefit future generations and your community. The tree planting day is taking place on Saturday 4th December between 10am-3pm.
If you would like to join us, please register all attendees (or ask people to book themselves) using the Eventbrite link here. We have staggered arrival times across the day to ensure covid-19 procedure compliance.
In addition, if you would like to volunteer your time to help at the event we would be incredibly grateful. We want to make the event as big a success as possible and so any support would be gratefully received. We don’t expect this at all but if you do want to lend a hand, please reply to this email, or contact us on teams@cityoftrees.org.uk
As key members of the Gatley community, we would also appreciate your support in sharing the message to the people of Gatley, after all the trees planted here will greatly benefit the local community. We would love as many people as possible to get involved on the day and for it to be a real community celebration.
Tree planting at Gatley Hill is particularly important for helping to intercept rain water and increase infiltration into the ground as this will help to reduce the volume of water entering the adjacent brook – a known cause of flooding downstream in Gatley village, as well as helping to increase our carbon storage as part of GM’s target of becoming net zero by 2038 as well as providing many other known benefits for people and wildlife.
